Acknowledgements The PhD thesis at hand is the result of the work of many years. During those years I received manifold support from different sides and, thus, would like to express my gratitude. I owe thanks to my supervisor Prof. Dr.-Ing. Phuoc Tran-Gia who laid excellent foundations for the creative work on current and relevant research questions at his department. The valuable environment is distinguished by a sound combination of scientifically interesting industry co-operations, projects in international context, and the contact to the worldwide research community.
